This week’s Tuesday’s Travel Tips takes us to Tampa. Tampa lies on the west coast of Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico. The greater Tampa area includes some of Florida’s most sought-after vacation haunts, including St. Petersburg-Clearwater, which boasts pristine beaches sure to calm your multi-tasking, over-worked, under-played self.
The Tampa International Airport acts as your gateway from the winter cold to a friendly, warm alternative. Flights from New York or Boston to Tampa are so short, by the time you finish snacking, watching a movie and learning the name of the Customer seated next to you, you’ve arrived!
Airport Operations Crewmember Paula relays that she’s not Greek, but she lives near Tarpon
Springs, which is a quaint area known for its Greek culture. The Sponge Dock strip is chocked full of restaurants and shops. Only 20 minutes west of Tampa on the gulf, Tarpon is a nice place to walk, eat and shop. Plus, it’s not too crowded like some of the other, more touristy destinations. North of Clearwater, this beach area offers a much bigger strip of hotels, restaurants and nightlife.
Serving up an eclectic variety of tasty cuisine, the top ten restaurants in the Tampa Bay Area , according to Urbanspoon include Bern’s Steak House, Datz, Ella’s Americana Folk Art Cafe, Taco Bus, Mazzaro’s Italian Market, Red Mesa Cantina, Salt Rock Grill, Delco’s Original Steaks and Hoagies, Rumba Island Bar and Grill, and Mr. Dunderbak’s.
For sports fans, Tampa is home to three professional sports teams, but as baseball fans will
likely know, the city is also host to spring training for several Major League Baseball teams, including the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Toronto Blue Jays, and several others nearby.
We’d be remiss to mention Florida and not talk about the beaches. The Tampa Bay area is renowned for its pristine beaches. Some of the most recommended spots to plop down on the sand include Sand Key County Park, Fort De Soto County Park, Egmont Key State Park, Greer Island Beach, Siesta Beach, Caspersen Beach, and Blind Pass Beach.
