In what is being called the “most tragic event of the country’s postwar history,” 97 people, including President Lech Kaczynski and a delegation of senior officials, were killed in a plane crash over Russia yesterday morning. The plane crashed while trying to land in dense fog.
Some of Poland’s best and brightest were on the flight that was on its way to a ceremony in Russia commemorating the Soviet massacre of Poland’s in 1940. The plane was a Tupolev TU-154 built in Russia 26 years ago. The country held two minutes of silence today and thousands gathered at the presidential palace in mourning.
