Have you ever thought about what items get confiscated at security in the airport? Aside from the usual — bottles that exceed the three ounces limit, pocket knives, foreign fruit, etc. — there are many more, and many strange, items that don’t make it through security. A new photo exhibit by photographer Taryn Simon entitled Contraband showcases 1,075 items, from the typical to the extremely unusual, that were stopped as they tried to make their way from other countries through New York’s JFK Airport. The photos will make up a book that publishes in the fall in conjunction with the exhibit that will open in Beverly Hills in September. In the meantime, The New York Times has published 40 of the photos which are available for viewing online.
