JetBlue Steps Up to Help Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” recently traveled to South Jordan, Utah to surprise the Gomez Family with a knock on their door that changed their lives, and JetBlue was there to help! Crewmembers from our Salt Lake Support Center willingly donated their time to build a home for Jonah and his family in just seven days!

Jonah Gomez is like any loveable, mischievous little boy in the first grade with hopes and dreams of becoming a professional soccer player.  His love of life has not been diminished by the fact that he has blood disorders which have caused him to undergo open-heart surgery.

The community has rallied around the family to help keep Jonah happy and healthy while spreading the word about the importance of bone marrow donors. So far, there has been no bone marrow matches for Jonah. He faces a tougher challenge than most because he’s of Latin descent and statistically fewer minorities join the National Marrow Donor Program.

The Gomez family was whisked away on a dream vacation to Disneyland while “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team leader Ty Pennington, designers Xzibit, Paige Hemmis, Michael Moloney and local business Holmes Homes, Inc., as well as community volunteers, built the family a brand new home.

Our own Crewmember Jennifer who works in Communications for our Customer Support Center in Salt Lake coordinated volunteer efforts and worked with JetBlue Leadership to provide a Getaways vacation for the Gomez Family. She also made sure there were plenty of our signature Terra Blue chips for the helpers.

Crewmembers were also on hand at the Real Salt Lake soccer game on June 25, 2011 to recruit bone marrow donors. Fans had the opportunity to get swabbed at seven major league soccer games across the nation in the hopes of finding a match for Jonah.
