Deepening Our Codeshare Partnership with Emirates

We’re pleased to announce today a deepening of our partnership with Emirates. We’ve applied for government approval to place our “B6″ code on flights operated by Emirates, the airline of Dubai, known as a bilateral codeshare agreement.

Under the expanded agreement, JetBlue will place our “B6” airline code on all flights currently operated by Emirates between the U.S. and Dubai International Airport, as well as between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Milan, Italy.

The agreement doesn’t change the customer experience. In fact, through the existing agreement, customers enjoy (and will continue to enjoy) the convenience of a single combined ticket for Emirates and JetBlue-operated flights, plus other benefits including one-stop check-in and baggage transfer.

Members of Skywards, the Emirates reward program, can earn miles on JetBlue-operated flights and also redeem miles for flights to any of JetBlue’s 77 destinations and counting throughout the Americas. Similarly, members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue loyalty program can earn points for Emirates-operated flights worldwide.

The agreement deepens a three-year partnership between JetBlue and Emirates. Emirates started placing its code on select JetBlue-operated flights in April 2012, expanding an interline agreement that dates back to 2010.

Burbank’s First Ever Wings for Autism event

Our Burbank team recently participated in their first ever Wings for Autism—an event our Boston Crewmembers have been involved with since May 2011, originally introduced by the Charles River Center and ARC.

In partnership with Pacific Child and Family Associates, an organization that supports children and adults diagnosed with autism and other disabilities, the Burbank team welcomed approximately 200 participants to Terminal A. Just like in Boston, these families practiced checking in, going through security, and boarding the aircraft.

Our General Manager in Burbank Christine reports that the event was a huge success, and struck an emotional chord with our crewmembers; everyone was so touched to see these families so grateful for the experience. We have received many letters of appreciation from participants, and photos from the day.

Participant Letter

I just wanted to express my deepest thank you to JetBlue and their staff for such an amazing time with Wings for Autism. My son, David, had a blast. He was seated in the front row of the aircraft and asked a million questions. He has had anxiety of flying and this really helped him start over coming that fear. In fact, he now sees it a fun experience after all. Peace is a priceless gift, and I think JetBlue and Wings for Autism helped my son attempt to achieve it. Thank you again.

Building Playgrounds in Areas Impacted by Hurricane Sandy

Did you know that only one-in-five children lives within walking distance of a park or playground? Following Hurricane Sandy, that number has increased in impacted areas. In the aftermath of natural disasters, play becomes even more critical as it creates a sense of normalcy and provides an emotional outlet for children. In an effort to support children in those areas most impacted, we’ve extended our pledge to rebuild New York with a commitment to allocate support for three playground builds this year in areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Our first post-Hurricane Sandy playground build will take place on May 18 at Magnolia Playground in Long Beach, NY. Two more builds will be announced later this Spring. Long Beach, located in Nassau County, Long Island, experienced significant damage to its shoreline and infrastructure. Magnolia Playground was destroyed nearly six months ago and hundreds of children living in the area have not had a suitable place to play since Hurricane Sandy.

The future site of a brand new playground in Long Beach!

While every KaBOOM! playground build is an inspiring event, the post-Hurricane Sandy playground builds will give volunteers a special chance to reflect on the storm’s impact while renewing their neighborhood. More than 200 volunteers from JetBlue, the City of Long Beach, Surf for All, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the local community will join forces to build a new play space at Magnolia Playground. The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in March.

Magnolia Playground is the 17th playground build by KaBOOM! in partnership with JetBlue. We’ve worked together over the last seven years to create play spaces for children across JetBlue’s communities and help fight the deficit of play for children in undeserved neighborhoods and areas under development following natural disasters. This partnership has successfully engaged more than 3,800 volunteers to move 16 tractor trailers full of mulch, which now benefit more than 10,000 children. JetBlue is a KaBOOM! National Partner, a group of organizations providing long-term guidance and support to KaBOOM! and its mission.

Since Hurricane Sandy, JetBlue has coordinated several efforts to provide assistance to its neighbors and help rebuild communities in New York. Just last month, JetBlue made significant progress in revitalizing Highland Park in Brooklyn. Airline crewmembers and community volunteers planted more than 2,500 trees in an area identified by the New York City Parks Department as a priority location for revitalization efforts. The 100-acre park lost a significant stretch of trees due to Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, in the days following the storm, JetBlue partnered with the NYC Food Truck Association to serve more than 25,000 meals to residents throughout in impacted areas. The airline also donated $820,000 to the American Red Cross on behalf of its customers for relief efforts in the New York area.

Our 82nd City: Port-au-Prince!

We’re excited to announce our intent to serve our 82nd BlueCity, Port-au-Prince in Haiti!

From Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) in the Haitian capital, we plan to offer one daily nonstop flight to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and twice daily flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), subject to receipt of government operating authority. We’ll look to take to the skies on December 5, 2013.

Our community involvement in Haiti predates our service announcement. In honor of Earth Day 2012, we partnered with Carbonfund.org Foundation to plant 83,000 trees in North and Northwest Haiti in order to rebuild areas impacted by the 2010 earthquake. In addition, to assist those most affected, we deployed crewmembers on our specially trained Care Team to our Santo Domingo station to coordinate with local agencies on the delivery of thousands of pounds of donated items to Haiti, coordinated matching donations, and offered seats on our flights to relief workers.

Stay tuned for more information soon about our newest city!

A Day in the Life: Recruiting

Welcome to A Day in the Life, where we take you behind the scenes at JetBlue to learn more about the important jobs that work in concert together to run a major airline. This time, we visit with Shivani, one of our Recruiters.

With a big smile and a bubbly personality, it’s clear that Shivani is a people person on first meeting. Responsible for inflight, or flight attendant, hiring, as well as for our College Crew, or internship program, Shivani works to identify the brightest and bluest to join our growing team of 15,000 and counting.

Above all, Shivani and our entire recruiting team are positioned to protect and strengthen the JetBlue culture through vetting and identifying the right talent. After all, our competitive advantage is our people – we wouldn’t be the airline that provides the best customer service in the skies if not for our 15,000 crewmembers that are selected for their passion

Shivani is part of a larger team composed of crewmembers like herself that handle the recruiting for all of our respective workgroups – airportspilotsinflight, customer support, system operations, technical opsground operations and support center crewmembers. Although our recruiting approach differs according to the workgroup, we have one core goal when identifying talent: to find people whose values are aligned with JetBlue’s five core values – Safety, Caring, Integrity Fun, and Passion – and to invite those who are a fit to become our newest blues.

————————————————————

Top Five Tips for Landing a Job at JetBlue

1. Do your homework! Research JetBlue. Be familiar with our five core values and company history, and most importantly know what’s happening at JetBlue today.

2. Know your story: Prepare for an interview by thinking of specific situations you have encountered, and how you have handled them.

3.  Show your passion: At JetBlue, we are all very passionate about the airline and what we do, so show passion for the role you are applying for as well as for JetBlue.

4. Be open and honest.

5. Be yourself! We are a fun company, and we just want you to be you!

————————————————————

As an airline that is profitable and growing (AKA, we’re hiring!) we see a lot of interest in any open positions that we have. Reviewing resumes to invite candidates to the interview process is no easy task. Shivani’s team received 8,000 resumes for 365 inflight positions (with more than 880 resumes received in just two hours!). Similarly, more than 1,000 resumes came in for 28 College Crew positions. “We’re very selective about who we ask to join the team,” relays Shivani. “It’s not just experience alone that we’re looking for; we ask the question, are you someone who is going to provide excellent customer service?”

Each week, Shivani’s team holds a BlueBlitz session, a meeting where dozens of inflight candidates learn more about JetBlue and get a chance to show off their professional and interpersonal skills. More than just an interview, this day-long event includes all sorts of games and activities that allow the JetBlue team to observe how the candidates interact with one another and demonstrate our core values. Later in the day, we conduct BlueRevues with a selection of the candidates. This is where we learn more about their interests and experience. Finally, we select our newest Inflight crewmembers.

Shivani’s job doesn’t end there. Our new hires then go on to orientation and training at JetBlue University in Orlando, and Shivani has a vested interest in seeing that her new hires make it through that experience and then move onto the line to take on their customer-facing roles. She works closely with the inflight team to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that our newest crewmembers are a strong fit for our culture.

The College Crew program is one that Shivani is particularly proud of. She helped to rebuild the program from the ground up, and is hopeful that she is helping to select interns that will eventually turn into full-time crewmembers at JetBlue. Each spring Shivani works with local universities to identify candidates for summer-long internships across various workgroups. Our program for selecting interns is much more strategic than just hiring extra sets of hands and helping college students gain workplace experience; our mission is to build an innovative internship program to identify a pipeline of future high performing talent by developing strategic university relationships and enhancing the intern experience.

Shivani and the recruiting team are constantly looking for new and different ways to engage potential talent, including via social media, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and developing direct relationships with colleges and universities and other partners to identify the right candidates to join the JetBlue family. As the landscape changes, Shivani’s team looks to keep up with the latest channels for communicating open positions and recruiting the best new crewmembers to deliver excellence in customer service.

Are you interested in working at JetBlue? Do you share our values of Safety, Caring, Integrity, Passion, and Fun? We’re always looking for people who can represent us well. Check out our open positions and to see if there’s a career here right for you!

JetBlue Leadership Talks About Fort Lauderdale Growth Plan

Our leadership, Dave (our CEO), Rob (our COO), and Robin (our CMO), were recently at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood to meet with the Broward County Aviation Department about the massive infrastructure development project underway at the airport.

During their trip, they sat down with the Sun Sentinel and spoke about past growth in this market, future expansion, and how the south runway expansion is allowing us to build our route portfolio beyond September 2014, when it is scheduled for completion.
