Unpacked: Business Partners

Welcome back to our fourth edition of Unpacked, where we demystify hot topics in the airline industry. This time around we’re going to peel back the layers of our workforce to explain how we work with business partners to keep our airline flying.

In addition to our 14,000 crewmembers that work on our reservations lines (most of whom work from home!), in-flight, at our airports and at our headquarters, we rely on business partners for a number of different services to ensure that our day-to-day operations run smoothly and that we provide the best possible customer experience.

All of the people you meet at New York’s JFK airport, our home base of operations, who greet you as you enter the building, check you in, collect your boarding pass at the gate, transport your checked bag (first bag always flies free!) to and from the plane, and maintain our aircraft (our airport, ground and technical operations crewmembers, respectively) are employed directly by JetBlue. At JFK, we work with business partners for our concessions (AKA, all of the great shops and restaurants you can take advantage of before or after your flight), fueling and deicing our aircraft, curbside baggage check-in, and a security company to help with everything from managing the ebb and flow of customer traffic to escorting celebrities (when we have our Live From T5 Concert Series). Of course, we also work closely with the TSA for security checkpoint staffing, the airports that we operate out of, and the local Port Authorities.

Our airport operations crewmembers in San José, Costa Rica

At other stations, particularly smaller ones like Bogotá, Colombia or San José, Costa Rica, where we have a limited number of daily flights, we also work with business partners to handle much of the customer experience, including staffing the ticketing counters, baggage handling. With these and all partners, we always make sure that anyone we’re joining forces with are a cultural fit for JetBlue and that we all share the same ethos; providing the best and safest experience, whether product or service, for our customers.

Airline interline agreements are another piece of the partnership puzzle. We’ve partnered with a growing list of some pretty fabulous airlines including Aer Lingus, American Airlines, Cape Air, El Al, Emirates, Icelandair, Jet Airways, LAN,  Lufthansa, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TAM, and Virgin Atlantic. These strategic alliances allow our customers to seamlessly connect from points across the JetBlue network to cities in every corner of the globe. We don’t fly to Tokyo, but a number of our partner airlines do, and entering into interline agreements allows us to help our customers get from point A to point Beirut.

A big part of success is not just in knowing what you do well, but in being able to identify what others do better. That’s why we’ve partnered with companies like American Express, Verizon, DIRECTV®,SiriusXM Radio®, ViaSat, and plenty of others to strengthen our infrastructure and to bring customers the very best in product and service offerings. We’re just not going to make a better cookie than Linden; that’s why we do the flying and leave the baking to them (same goes for all of our other tasty onboard snack options)!

Check out our earlier editions of Unpacked to learn all about Lightning Strikes, Diversions, and Turbulence, and stay tuned for the first Thursday of next month when we serve the next up!

Ready Team Receives Recognition For Volunteer Efforts

It’s been an exciting year for our JetBlue Ready Team, supporting numerous volunteer efforts and making deployments across the country to help those in need. In June, the team had its first national deployment to Bismarck (a city we do not fly to), in order to support residents who were forced to flee from their homes during the Missouri River Basin elevation. In September, the team deployed again to Binghamton following Tropical Storm Irene.

Their local volunteer efforts include the American Red Cross Metro Area Drill; September 11 Memorial; ING NYC Marathon; Veterans Day parade. The team has grown to nearly 500 crewmembers, composed of volunteers from all over our network.

On December 1, the American Red Cross in Greater New York presented us with the “Corporate Community Partnership Award”! Congratulations to our Ready Team and thanks for all that you do to help those in need!

JetBlue Loves Playtime! We’re Teaming Up To Construct A Community Playground in Revere, MA

We’re teaming up with long-time partner KaBOOM! as well as with Revere Neighborhood Developers and the City of Revere to build our 11th playground this Saturday, Oct. 29 at Costa Park in Revere, Massachusetts. The playground build begins with a kickoff ceremony at 8:30 a.m. ET and the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m.

Costa Park, the children’s playground on Shirley Avenue just a few blocks from the Revere Beach T stop, is in need of revitalization. Recognizing this need, we’re partnering with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play, and local residents to make the park a place where families, daycares, and schools can feel proud to bring their children to play. When complete, the new playground will provide a safe play space for 500 children. Crewmembers from our Boston station will volunteer their efforts to help build a playground in just one day’s time.

The playground will be the 11th built by us and KaBOOM! in an effort to fight the play deficit and save play. We’ve also helped build playgrounds in Washington D.C., Salt Lake City, Utah, Kissimmee and Orlando, Florida, and Long Island City, New York, among other cities.

JetBlue Customers Will Continue To Run on Dunkin’!

Image courtesy of cote on Flickr

We’re pleased to announce today the extension of our partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts to continue to bring customers quality caffeine fixes while in the air.

To celebrate our partnership we’ll be surprising 43 people spotted holding a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee tomorrow in Boston with a free round-trip flight to any of our destinations out of Boston. The 43 denotes the number of non-stop markets we will fly to out of Boston with the addition of service to St. Thomas starting on December 15. For details, restrictions and alternate means of entry, visit www.dunkindonuts.com/jetblue. In addition, some of our customers on select flights originating from Boston today will receive commemorative Dunkin’ Donuts in-flight ear buds.

Our partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts began in 2006 in direct response to feedback from travelers who wanted a better in-flight coffee experience. According to a joint survey in 2006, more than one-third of respondents stated that airline coffee was worse than their daily cup of coffee. Those surveyed also cited coffee most frequently as the beverage they would like to improve on the airplane.

How many cups of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee have we served on our flights since 2006 when our partnership started? Take your best guess below.

JetBlue goes back to school

Image courtesy of skinnylawyer on Flickr

Over the summer, our Commercial (or marketing) team partnered with Columbia University to give 52 MBA students a challenging assignment: how to keep the JetBlue product fresh for the next decade. After hearing a presentation on our history, growth, culture and Customer Experience, the students had a few weeks to generate innovative ideas and craft presentations.

Crewmembers of the Commercial team listened to presentations and judged on overall originality and whether their idea warranted any further exploration by JetBlue. The Commercial team reports that the Columbia partnership was a worthwhile experience and a great way to get a fresh perspective from the eyes of the consumer; ideas ranged from pre-flight initiatives — both inside and outside the airport — to enhancing the onboard experience.

According to Columbia, it was one of the best experiences the course has offered in years and the students learned a lot!
