Today marks the start of our third annual ‘Soar with Reading’ program. This initiative was designed to encourage children’s imaginations to take flight through reading. We are excited to welcome new program partners Random House Children’s Books and best-selling author Mary Pope Osborne, known for her award-winning “Magic Tree House” book series.
There is a large deficit in the U.S. regarding children’s access to age-appropriate books. In low-income neighborhoods, there is an average of one book available for every 300 children, compared to 13 such books per child in middle-income neighborhoods. Soar With Reading provides deserving children with books throughout the summer to help maintain the knowledge base that was built during the school year.
Head over to our new website jetblue.com/SoarWithReading for some great interactive activity booklets, games, reading lists and more. If you’re traveling this summer, activity booklets will also be distributed at JetBlue terminals through August to encourage summer reading.
The ‘Soar with Reading’ website also provides an opportunity for children, along with a parent, to create and share an adventure by answering the question, “What magical places would you like to travel to with Magic Tree House’s Jack and Annie and JetBlue this summer?” Participants will be entered for a chance to win great prizes including a $5,000 college scholarship. For every submission, JetBlue and Random House Children’s Books will donate one book, up to $500,000 worth of books, to Mary Pope Osborne’s Classroom Adventures Program, benefiting underserved children.
Reading events with Mary Pope Osborne and characters Jack and Annie will take place in JetBlue cities including Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, New York, Orlando and San Juan throughout the summer. Children in attendance at each reading event will take home a copy of a “Magic Tree House” book by Mary Pope Osborne to help keep them reading and let their imaginations soar.
