Last Thursday, the our crewmembers in New York volunteered with Citymeals-on-Wheels. If you’re from New York, or call it home, you may be familiar with this non-profit organization founded in 1981, by two influential figures in the culinary world—food critic Gael Greene and master chef James Beard—who learned that some elderly New Yorkers did not have access to food on weekends and holidays. During these times, city-funded senior centers were closed, and thousands went hungry.
To change this saddening statistic, the pair rallied their friends to raise funds that could hopefully be used to develop a city-changing initiative. The donations went to the Department of Aging under one condition: that the full amount was used to buy food. Citymeals-on-wheels was born and has been feeding millions of elderly residents ever since.
For the year ending June 30, 2012, the organization delivered 1.8 million meals to nearly 17,000 New Yorkers. The organization prides itself on the nutritious food it provides to homebound elderly residents throughout all five boroughs, with the help of thousands of volunteers including corporate groups—like JetBlue!
Crewmembers from our Legal, Safety, Corporate Security, and Corporate Communications teams were divided into teams that carried the names of our tailfins: Mosaic, Blueberries, Harlequin, and Stripes. Each group visited one of the Citymeals locations for a day of giving back, whether it was preparing the meals or actually delivering them on foot to various homes—but their mission didn’t end there. Tasked with demonstrating team spirit, each Tailfin was serious about showcasing their united enthusiasm for our airline’s participation in this special volunteer project. From handcrafted t-shirts and tailfins, to blueberry muffins and a musical performance, team spirit was in full force!
