Iran sternly warns airlines to use their words carefully

In what can be seen as a contentious attempt to punish certain, foreign air travel into the region, Iran issued a warning that any airline referring to the waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula as the “Arabian Gulf” rather than the “Persian Gulf” will be banned from the Iranian airspace and repeat offenders planes will be grounded. They take this warning quite seriously.

Semantics is a hotbed of controversy in Iran, where being called an Arab rather than a Persian is a grave insult. The same, but on the opposite side, holds true for those living in Saudi Arabia and who consider themselves to be Arabs.
