Images: KaBOOM! Playground Build in Long Beach, NY

Thanks to the 200 volunteers who joined us this weekend for the Magnolia Park Rebuild. With your help, we built a playground in six hours and brought back play to the kids of Long Beach! As New York’s Hometown Airline we are committed to rebuilding post-Hurricane Sandy, and will build two more playgrounds this year.

KaBOOM! Design Day in Long Beach, NY

Our Corporate Social Responsibility team and members of our partner KaBOOM! hosted a design day for our upcoming playground build in Long Beach, NY – our first build in a Sandy impacted community. We’ll be building two more playgrounds later this year to help other communities hard hit by Sandy, our show of support for rebuilding New York’s neighborhood’s as the state’s Hometown Airline.

To kick off the planning process, our crewmembers sat down with more than 40 children, ages three through 14, and discussed the playground of their dreams; something we plan to make a reality for this struggling local neighborhood that was hard hit by the storm.

The build will take place on Saturday, May 18. We’re still finalizing locations and dates, so stay tuned for details.

After Sandy: Help us rebuild with KaBOOM! and NYRP

Following Hurricane Sandy, we told you about a few ways we’re planning to help rebuild our local communities. As promised, we have some details to share. We’re partnering with KaBOOM! to build three playgrounds in areas affected by the storm. You, along with friends and family, can head to KaBOOM!’s website to nominate an affected area. The building will take place between May and September, so once the locations are decided, we’ll let you know how you can volunteer to help!

As part of our rebuilding efforts we’re also dedicating our Annual One Thing That’s Green New York event to a neighborhood that has been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. For this event, we will once again be partnering with New York Restoration Project (NYRP) to plant trees on Saturday, April 20. Stay tuned for more!

Photos: Fort Lauderdale KaBOOM! Playground Build

Last weekend, we completed our 16th playground build with our partner, KaBOOM! More than 200 volunteers turned out to construct a dream playground for the children of charter school Kathleen C. Wright Leadership Academy. Before our build, the children were bussed to an offsite location to play, since there was no grounds or facilities to accommodate recess. The teachers and children were incredibly moved by the turnout of volunteers and their dedication to the project; in fact, our speedy team completed the build in approximately five hours—way ahead of schedule!

Joining our crewmember volunteers and KaBOOM! representatives were fans of the Florida Panthers, the professional hockey team we sponsor. Approximately 60 members of the Panthers staff came out to participate in the playground build, making this the first time we’ve ever KaBOOM!-ed with one of our sponsor partners.

Oakland KaBOOM! Build A Success!

More than 300 volunteers from as far as England came to help build our 15th playground with our partners at KaMOOM! and a dozen other playground structures for the students of Oakland’s Community School for Creative Education.

Everyone pitched in to build, organize and clean. The KaBOOM! team had organization and logistics down to a science. Crewmembers from different cities and departments and even JetBlue pilot, Captain Russ showed up to help. All the General Managers from all the Bay Area cities, San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento came early and stayed late to finish their projects. It was specially fun to watch SFO’s GM, Ken get covered in concrete dust as they mixed it for some of the play structure’s foundation.

KPFA DJ, Jose Ruiz set up his gear at 7am. He got there early and full of jokes. He and DJ Scott Manley played throughout the day. Music made the task lighter and time fly faster; their music selection was worldly, fun and upbeat.

Joi Glass from High Street’s 24-hour fitness did not disappoint. She had the volunteers’ adrenaline going before the building started and to get everyone stretched and limber for the day’s work.

People from the community, school, all walks of life and great distances came to help each other and create a good environment for kids. Everybody was dirty, sweaty yet smiling and laughing knowing that their contribution, no matter how big or small, will leave an indelible mark in the future of the school and its students.

Perhaps best summarized by CSCE’s principal, Becky Westbrook, in her speech during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with her voice cracking, her eyes swelling with tears she thanked everyone from the bottom of her heart and ended that, “it’s all for the kids.”

Building Our 15th Playground With KaBOOM!

We’re proud to announce a partnership with the Community School for Creative Education and KaBOOM! to build our next playground in Oakland, CA today. We’ve worked with our long-standing partner KaBOOM! over the last seven years to build playgrounds for children across our network. The playground location was determined in February by our customers who were invited to vote on the next playground location on our Facebook page. The Bay Area was the lucky winner and will have a brand new park this summer, the 15th playground built through the partnership and the third in California.

As the funding partner for this build, JetBlue volunteers and community residents will work side-by-side to create a new playground for the children of the Community School for Creative Education. This will be our second playground built in California this year and record fourth playground built in 2012 (Long Beach, CA; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Boston, MA: San Francisco, CA; and New York, NY). In seven years, JetBlue and KaBOOM! have built 15 playgrounds, engaged more than 3,000 volunteers and served more than 8,000 children every year by providing a safe place to play.

14th Playground Build in Partnership with KaBOOM! A Success!

Despite the heat, throngs of volunteers turned out yesterday to build a playground at Costa Park in Revere, Massachusetts. The venture was a team effort with our partners at KaBOOM! as well as The Neighborhood Developers and the City of Revere to build our 14th playground.

This is our fourth playground build in Boston and the second built in Costa Park. This past October, we built the 5-12 year olds of Revere a playground; this new play space is for 2-5 year olds. The new playground will provide a safe play space for 500 children. Crewmembers from our station at Boston Logan International Airport, where we’re the largest airline with more than 45 destinations, volunteered our efforts to help build the playground in just one day’s time. We’ve helped to build playgrounds in Kissimmee and Orlando, Florida, Long Island City, New York, Long Beach, California, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Washington D.C., among other cities.

The Results are in! JetBlue’s Annual Swing For Good Campaign Raises $500,000 for Charity

This year’s Swing for Goof Golf Classic and the Bid for Good online charitable auction marked the most successful year to date for our annual fundraising campaign. Crewmembers, customers and business partners joined to raise $500,000 for our non-profit partners – KaBOOM! And First Book. As a result,  each nonprofit partner will receive $250,000 to continue with their youth-focused initiatives.

This year marked the fifth anniversary of The Swing for Good Classic. Since 2009, JetBlue has raised more than $1.5 million for a range of nonprofit partners and charitable organizations.   This event began as friendly competition between JetBlue and its business partners to make a difference for children throughout JetBlue’s network. We then added Bid for Good, powered by Charity Buzz, in 2010 as an extension of the golf outing. Bid For Good provides an online option for those that cannot attend the Golf Classic, providing an invitation to give beyond the golf event.

Every year our crewmembers and business partners come out and have a great time, supporting a great cause. Take a look at all the fun that was had at this year’s event:

.

We are committed to both KaBOOM! And First Book beyond the annual Swing for Good campaign. We will continue to work with KaBOOM! to provide a third playground  in an area impacted by Hurricane Sandy to restore play and a sense of normalcy for affected children. We are also working with First Book to provide 250,000 new books to children in need. JetBlue recently began service to Worcester, Mass and will soon launch service in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In partnership with First Book, the airline will provide new reading materials to children in both cities, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy — access to books.
